Decrypting Pasar Baru 2

(Pre : I was planning on making other post about this, to bring out the details about how we use many type of information into so-called Architecture Diagram. With all the attention are pointing into this type of diagram (from what i saw in my pinterest) i wanted to make this post that act as a series to the decrypting pasar baru, that the content will talk about decrypting bigger pieces into small pieces and how in the end, it was arranged into a trace that could become our clue to know what really happened in that particular place)

As an architect, the way we turn this kind of information into something so-called Scoring, Matrix, or Diagram can be the most important thing to do in processing a story that is made afterwards. The way we put it, stack it, line it up, will produce something with different meaning – different story to tell. The Story itself is about the subject (Actor), Object (Stage), and the Script (According to the way they originally worked), can be changed by the ‘response’ from the actor and how the actor accordingly or not accordingly run their stage by the script. The script its not some Godlike tier of righteous to know what is good and what is bad, decided by the architect on that time. Unlike performance, architecture can be made to find various changes done by actor from their physical bodies. Script are made to be followed, yet in Architecture, in my opinion, the script was made to find out the development of the society, and from this error we can make a better architecture for its society. Sometimes we have to make something to separate it from ‘nothingness’, we have to do something first to find the evidence later, ‘there will be no evidence, if there is no murder case going around in the first place’.

Pasar Baru as one of the oldest market, contain many kind of information of how they develop their spaces (extend their sellings), their system (two side market, approchable by both cars and walkers), their sellings (from many kind of fabric into gold jewelery into footwear and now a combination of them all) can be traced by this method. By identifying the subject (customer) to what is their purposes of coming to pasar baru, and how they run the script. For example, people who wanted to get new fabric, they will go to the west side of pasar baru, consumed by time when choosing which fabric they will choose, they take time to break from their original purpose which ended up eating on AW or Bakmi Gang Kelinci. This kind of missinterpretation from the script could happen by the grow itself. Today’s people intended to shop longer than before, and with increasingly crowded conditions making people uncomfortable, they prefer to take a break from  their previous activities, which occurred with the alibi 'lunch' or 'dinner'. The existence of a place to eat in Pasar Baru are a sign that there are deviations that occur over time, but their existence is entirely new in the system. The fact that, this new system does not effect the actor by anymean, their acceptance by the actor cannot be denied. This state its not normal, but creating the new normal.

The issue that I brought in this case, which is pausing or temporary stopping. It started by analyzing the actor, which i called the ‘bike seller lady’ its not about the bike she sell, this terms enforced to the type of seller who sell their stuff while riding a bike (mobile seller) by that means, they can circled Pasar Baru in about 10 minutes or so. Their presence its not just about the effectiveness of selling stuff, or can reach various of places in short time, its about how people, in the particular moment, they want to stop for what they are doing, and change it to something else. That’s what happen in Pasar Baru, already growing to something of new living place for people who sell their stuff. This stopping its not about the customer but the one who in charge on selling the owner’s stuff through the store. This kind of implanted system are weird but yet, it is what it is. There are ants because there is sugar.

This kind of practice, help me to identify people’s mind on how they establish their own spaces, not physical, but metaphysical;not permanent, but temporary. This mobile seller, they are using every wall between every store to be a space of transaction, why ? it does not bother anyone who wanted to enter the store. The way they percive this space will be different to us, wall is a wall, but this kind of wall could give many kind of interpretation accordingly to the one who sees it. Temporary stopping, can happen because there is an alibi. This seller act as the alibi for people to stop their works for a quite of time, and does act as something to start a communication between people who bought the item. This story implemented not by the architect, but by the actor who have developed themself against places that have developed too.

In result, i tried to make this temporary stopping in architecture problematic approach. Make this activity somehow more eligible for this particular people who occupied this particular spaces. Honestly, i am not satisfied by the final results that i have produced. I think i could have produce something better than what it is now, but i didn’t have much time either to make this architecture cooler or truer than what it is. Then again, this practice is about learning the system beneath the surface, how we decrypted the system by the trace they were leaving for a period of time. What appears after that, are the result of growing community, actor and object, and how they processing their script to what it is now.
